Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
